What is in the ITIL Version 5 pack

The pack follows the structure of the new edition rather than retrofitting it onto the old one. Grouped by theme:

  • Foundations – the four dimensions of product and service management, key concepts of digital product and service management, service relationships and the service journey
  • The ITIL Value System framework, the seven guiding principles, and a governance framework with governance patterns
  • The product and service lifecycle – an activity policy for each of the eight activities: Discover, Design, Acquire, Build, Transition, Operate, Deliver and Support
  • Management practices – a practices manual plus individual policies for change enablement, incident, problem, service request, IT asset, monitoring and event, release, deployment, knowledge, capacity and performance, availability, service continuity, supplier, information security and service level management
  • Value streams – a value stream mapping and management guide, a mapping template and a value stream register
  • AI governance – an AI governance policy, AI capability and use case register, AI risk assessment and oversight procedure, human oversight and escalation standard, and an AI in service operations standard
  • Experience management – experience management policy, experience level agreement template and an experience metrics catalog
  • Improvement and assessment – continual improvement model and register, maturity model assessment guide, capability and maturity assessment workbook, transformation roadmap
  • Reference – RACI master, metrics and KPI catalog, design factors and context workbook, practice-to-lifecycle traceability matrix, cross-mapping to external frameworks, and the ITIL 4 to Version 5 transition guide

ITIL Version 5 - lifecycle activity policies, management practices and registers

ITIL Version 5 and ITIL 4 are running in parallel

PeopleCert announced ITIL Version 5 in January 2026 and the Foundation certification, along with a Foundation Bridge for existing ITIL 4 holders, is available now. The higher-level modules are still rolling out.

Critically, no retirement date has been announced for ITIL 4. The two run side by side, and ITIL 4 certifications remain valid and sellable. So this is not a situation where your existing documentation is suddenly non-compliant – it is one where new documentation should be built to ITIL Version 5 and existing documentation migrated in an orderly way.

The transition guide included in the pack sets out what moved. The most visible additions are the ITIL Value System framework, the eight-activity product and service lifecycle, and first-class treatment of AI governance and experience management, none of which had dedicated documentation in ITIL 4. You can check the current certification scheme at peoplecert.org.

Who needs ITIL Version 5

Service management teams standing up documented practices for the first time, who should build to ITIL Version 5 rather than adopt a framework already being superseded. Organisations with ITIL 4 documentation that want an orderly migration rather than a rewrite. Service providers whose customers or auditors ask what governs incident, change and service level management. And consultants who need a brandable baseline for an ITSM engagement.

How the ITIL Version 5 maps to the framework

Each lifecycle activity has its own policy rather than being folded into a single manual, so you can adopt the pack incrementally – Operate and Support first, Discover and Design later – without the documents contradicting each other. The practice-to-lifecycle traceability matrix shows which management practice feeds which activity, which is the view most teams lack when they try to map ITIL onto how they actually work.

Frequently asked questions

Is ITIL 4 obsolete now?

No. ITIL Version 5 and ITIL 4 run in parallel and no ITIL 4 retirement date has been announced. Existing ITIL 4 certifications and documentation remain valid.

Why buy a Version 5 pack if ITIL 4 still works?

Because new documentation written to a superseded edition ages immediately, and because Version 5 adds AI governance, experience management and value stream material that ITIL 4 simply does not cover.

Does it help us migrate from ITIL 4?

Yes. A dedicated ITIL 4 to Version 5 transition guide sets out what changed and where existing content rehomes.

Is this an ITIL certification course?

No. This is documentation – policies, procedures, registers and assessment tooling for running service management. Certification is through PeopleCert.

How many documents are included?

57 editable templates – 50 Word documents and 7 Excel workbooks – plus a usage guide, an FAQ and a licence file.

ITSM documentation usually sits alongside a certifiable management system. See the ISO 20000 Toolkit for the certifiable service management standard, the COBIT 2019 Toolkit for IT governance, and the ISO 27001 Toolkit for information security. For AI oversight beyond the service desk, see the ISO 42001 Toolkit.

Implementing for clients? The Consultant Package licenses all 86 toolkits and assessment tools on this site for unlimited client engagements, under one firm-wide licence. One payment of $1,399, no subscription and no per-client fee.

Delivery, format and licence

Your ITIL Version 5 downloads immediately after checkout as native Microsoft Word and Excel files. Nothing is watermarked or locked, so you can rebrand the documents, bring them under your own document control and revise them for as long as you need them.

One-time purchase. No subscription and no annual renewal. Because the source files are yours, revising a procedure after an audit finding or a change of scope is an internal edit rather than another purchase.
