What is in the ISO 14001 2026 transition pack

Every document carries a reference code and is filed under the clause it serves, so an assessor can be walked through the system in the order the standard is written. The thirteen sections are:

  • 00 Start Here – a read-me that explains the structure and the order to work through it
  • 01 Context of the Organization – context analysis, interested parties, scope of the EMS
  • 02 Leadership and Policy – environmental policy, roles, responsibilities and authorities
  • 03 Planning – risks and opportunities, environmental objectives and programmes
  • 04 Environmental Aspects – aspects and impacts register with a documented significance methodology
  • 05 Compliance Obligations – legal and other requirements register and evaluation of compliance
  • 06 Planning of Changes – new in the 2026 edition, and the section most existing systems are missing
  • 07 Support – competence, awareness, communication and control of documented information
  • 08 Operation – operational control, lifecycle perspective and outsourced process control
  • 09 Emergency Preparedness – response procedures, drill records and review
  • 10 Performance Evaluation – monitoring, internal audit programme and management review
  • 11 Improvement – nonconformity, corrective action and continual improvement
  • 12 Regulatory, Transition and Mapping – the 2015-to-2026 crosswalk and gap tooling

What changed, and what your ISO 14001 2026 transition has to cover

ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026 and ISO 14001:2015 was withdrawn. The headline structural change is the adoption of the Harmonized Structure, the common clause framework ISO now applies across its management system standards, which makes running a combined system with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 considerably less duplicative.

The change that catches most existing systems out is Planning of Changes, which now has a section of its own. If your current EMS handles change informally, that is the first gap an auditor will find, and section 06 exists to close it. Consideration of climate change, added across the management system standards by amendment in 2024, is carried into the new edition.

A certificate to ISO 14001:2015 does not lapse the day the new edition appears. A transition window of roughly three years applies and your certification body will confirm the date that binds your certificate. Section 12 holds the crosswalk and the gap assessment so the ISO 14001 2026 transition is assessed at a routine surveillance visit rather than under deadline pressure. You can read ISO own summary on the ISO 14000 family page at iso.org.

Who needs ISO 14001 2026 transition

Two groups. Organisations already certified to ISO 14001:2015, who now have a transition to plan, evidence and pass – the crosswalk and gap assessment in section 12 exist for precisely that. And organisations certifying for the first time, usually because a tender, a framework agreement or a customer environmental questionnaire demands it, who would rather build to the current edition than adopt a system that is already superseded. Consultants use the pack as a brandable baseline, since the files carry no watermarks, no locked fields and no per-seat licence.

How the ISO 14001 2026 transition maps to the framework

The aspects and impacts register ships with a worked significance methodology rather than an empty grid, which is the document environmental auditors probe hardest. The compliance obligations register pairs each legal requirement with the evaluation record that proves you checked it. Because the structure follows the standard rather than a vendor framework, the system stays portable if you change certification body.

Frequently asked questions

Is this written to ISO 14001:2026 or the 2015 edition?

To ISO 14001:2026, the current edition, including the new Planning of Changes section. Section 12 handles the move from 2015 for systems that already exist.

We hold a 2015 certificate. How long do we have?

Roughly three years from publication in April 2026, with your certification body confirming the exact date for your certificate. Start early so the transition is assessed at a normal surveillance audit.

How many documents are included?

67 editable Word templates across thirteen sections, plus a read-me that sets out the order to work through them.

Does it cover the climate change requirement?

Yes. Consideration of climate change is handled in the context and interested parties documents, in line with the 2024 amendment carried into the new edition.

Can we use it across multiple sites?

Yes. The licence covers your organisation, so you can scope the EMS to one site or roll it out across several without buying additional copies.

The Harmonized Structure makes combined systems markedly easier to operate. Pair this with the ISO 9001 Toolkit, also now at its 2026 edition, and the ISO 45001 Toolkit for occupational health and safety – or take all three in the IMS Toolkit. For energy performance alongside environmental management, see the ISO 50001 Toolkit.

Delivery, format and licence

Your ISO 14001 2026 transition downloads immediately after checkout as native Microsoft Word and Excel files. Nothing is watermarked or locked, so you can rebrand the documents, bring them under your own document control and revise them for as long as you need them.

One-time purchase. No subscription and no annual renewal. Because the source files are yours, revising a procedure after an audit finding or a change of scope is an internal edit rather than another purchase.
